I have worked in many facilities around the world and QASP really is world class. It enables me to meet the highest welfare and experimental conditions which are necessary to successfully conduct experiments. Students now have the opportunity to experience research to the highest standards. The availability of QASP has enhanced our ability to attract re-search funds from industry bodies.

I have been leading the development of a novel cattle tick vaccine since 2005 with external funding of approximately $4.5m. In the last 12 years and since QASP opened in 2008, this project has run 11 cattle tick vaccine challenge trials at the facility. Cattle ticks cost $175m and $US22-30b annually in losses in Australia and worldwide, respectively. Full patents for this vaccine were submitted February 2018- awaiting approval. This research has led to my international reputation in this field by using QASP’s ‘state of the art’ facilities and very experienced staff. We were further privileged to be filmed by ABC Landline which aired 26th July 2020 including QASP staff. Link: https://www.abc.net.au/landline/ticked-off:-cracking-the-code-for-a-cattle-tick/12492670?nw=0. QASP staff have thus developed skills in managing tick vaccine trials which is a rare resource in Australia. QASP is thus a unique and in demand facility servicing UQ and commercial enterprises not otherwise available anywhere else in Australia.

We have been conducting ruminant nutrition research within QASP for over 12 years. We have not had an experiment or request that the QASP team have been unable to accommodate. The excellent facilities allow us to undertake both applied and basic research in a manner that ensures good experimental outcomes and high animal welfare standards. Access to QASP facilities and the support of the QASP team has increased our ability to attract funding for our research. .

In my experience working in different countries, the quality of the research is the result of several variables, including the excellence of the research facility. Being able to count on the QASP team and facilities is of the utmost importance to meet the highest quality standards in the science being conducted. QASP has the combination of the right things: a very friendly team of staff members that are always prompt to assist us, outstanding facilities that allow the work with animals to be conducted safely and efficiently, and easy access to labs and storage facilities. It is a world-class facility that is very accessible to students, our research assistants of today and the scientists of tomorrow.

Our experience with the QASP facility was excellent. The QASP facility offers a wide range of sheds, climate-controlled rooms and PC2 laboratories. QASP staff members deliver high quality support and assistance from daily monitoring of the animals to sample collection and data recording. The QASP facility enables us to assure the highest levels of; welfare of the animals involved in the experiment, standard procedure, data quality and control over the environmental conditions. I will keep using the QASP facility for my future research trials and highly recommend the QASP facility and staff.

I have seen and worked at similar facilities North America and in Europe, and QASP is as good or better. We have undertaken a number of studies within the climate controlled rooms and the feedlot at QASP. This climate control facility is one of the best in the world for undertaking large animal research. The ability to house animals in groups or individuals, and the flexibility to conduct studies with fluctuating or set temperatures and humidity has enabled us to attract significant external funding. The feedlot and the climate controlled rooms have also allowed staff and students to participate in high quality research.

I have been developing piglet trials at QASP for the last 4 years and I have always been very pleased with the outstanding and professional predisposition of all the staff involved. One of the main virtues of the Precinct is the versatility of the facilities which allows to develop research of the highest standard in practically any farm animal species you may require. In particular, QASP PC2 and climate controlled rooms have the potential to put QASP as an international reference for animal science studies.

We have been extremely satisfied with both the facilities and level of service provided at QASP. The staff have supported our research at many levels – from animal care and sample collection, to consultation on experimental design and ethics. Their commitment to achieving scientifically robust outcomes whilst maintaining high welfare standards is evident at all times. I look forward to further collaboration with QASP and continued research success.
