Effluent Waste Treatment Plant
Effluent Waste Treatment Plant

QASP incorporates a novel waste treatment system, specifically designed to treat and decontaminate Risk Group 2 microorganisms originated from the Physical Containment Level 2 (PC2) Animal Holding rooms and necropsy area. The system uses a concentrated alkaline, 50% Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), under Dangerous Goods legislative requirements, and purges this chemical in the 10,000L waste tanks to generate a final molarity of 1M of the decontaminated effluent waste material prior to disposal through a licenced contractor.

Multiple independent laboratory and plant validations have been carried out to ensure that a 1M of NaOH is sufficient to deactivate selected micro-organisms present in effluent waste originating from the PC2 animal rooms. The treatment period (or dwell time) will depend on the type of research and micro-organism used. The waste treatment plant is fully automated and monitored around the clock, with any issues eliciting alarms and immediate response.
